On September 12, 2026, the Inheritance and Innovation: 42nd Teachers’ Day Gathering of Prof. Wang’s Spine Surgery Team was held in Huaihua, Hunan Province. Experts and scholars from across China’s spine community gathered to discuss the development of spine care and the cultivation of medical talents. The event featured Dr. Rosenthal, Head of the Section of Spine Surgery, Regional Hospital Bad Homburg, Germany, and former President of the German Spine Society, as a special international guest. Dr. Rosental was invited to deliver a keynote lecture entitled “Educating Spine Surgeons-- The German (DWG) Experience.” During the lecture, he shared that, after completing the residency and received the specialist degree, the orthopedic surgeons and neursorugeons in Germany are free to choose any subspecialty. Therefore, the training on spine surgery varies depending on a surgeon’s basic training program. The German Spine Society (DWG) was established through the merger of The Society for Spine Research and The Society of Spine Surgery. One of the goals of the DWG was to bridge the differences between the two specialties in the diagnosis and treatment of spinal disorders by establishing standardized training program. After years of development, the DWG has become one of the largest spine societies in Europe, with approximately 3,000 members. In 2026, the society also celebrated its 20th anniversary. Neurosurgeons and orthopedic surgeons can participate in the spine training program from the DWG during or after their residency. The program consists of six to ten modules, with each module lasting two days and the overall program extending over two years. Upon completion of the required coursework, the candidate can obtain the Basic Certificate. By completing the required number of spine surgeries and submitting the corresponding surgical records, they can be given the Master Certificate. Senior surgeons who serve as department heads and fulfill a certain amount of scientific publications will qualify for the Excellence Certificate. It is worth noting that this certification is not awarded by the DWG alone. It is jointly granted by the German Spine Society(DWG), the German Society of Neurosurgery (DGNC), and the German Society for Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery (DGOU). In addition to individual certification, the DWG introduced a clinic certification in 2015. Based on hospitals’ medical facilities, capabilities in interdisciplinary collaboration and in diagnosing and treating complex spinal disorders, spine centers are classified into Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3. Level 1 represents the highest level and is typically awarded to university hospitals or specialized hospitals. Dr. Rosenthal emphasized that the core purpose of the DWG’s certification program is not simply to obtain a certificate. Rather, through standardized training in knowledge and technical skills, together with the development of medical infrastructure, the program aims to equip surgeons with more comprehensive and systematic capabilities in the diagnosis and treatment of spinal disorders, thereby enabling them to provide patients with higher-quality, state-of-the-art care. The Chinese colleagues shared that Dr. Rosenthal’s presentation was comprehensive and highly informative. It provided them with a deeper understanding of Germany’s rigorous and systematic training system to spine surgeons and proved highly rewarding. They look forward to further exchanges and collaborations in the future!
