Recently, the Department of Orthopedics of Shenzhen Second People's Hospital was once again selected as the "National Team" in the teaching base of the orthopedics special competence training project, and was approved as the first national Orthopedics training and teaching base in Shenzhen. Professor Manyi Wang, a well-known Orthopedics and Trauma specialist in China and the Director of the Department, was appointed as the chair of the teaching base.
It is reported that Shenzhen Second People's Hospital, as the only hospital selected in Shenzhen, was listed in the National Team again after becoming the first national key clinical specialty in Orthopedics.
In order to improve the hospital's academic level and professional competence of Orthopedics, as well as to promote international exchanges and cooperation, Shenzhen Second People's Hospital recently conducted three international Orthopedics video conferences with three well-known European hospitals.
Sino-Swiss Foot and Ankle Surgery Video Conference
May 22nd
On May 22nd, Prof. Beat Hintermann, the Director of the Department of Orthopedics at Basel Cantonal Hospital, Switzerland, and his wife, Dr. med. Roxa Ruiz, the Senior Physician of the Ankle Center at Basel Cantonal Hospital, held a Sino-Swiss video conference on Foot and Ankle surgery with the Ankle Surgery Department of Shenzhen Second People’s Hospital.
Prof. Hintermann first shared with Shenzhen Second People’s Hospital of the evolution of treatment options for ankle osteoarthritis. He introduced that about 1% of adults in the world are affected by ankle osteoarthritis,of which injury is the main cause. He explained the importance of optimizing treatment for Ankle Arthritis through cases.
In the treatment of ankle osteoarthritis, Prof. Hintermann compared the postoperative conditions of arthrodesis and Total Ankle Replacement. The clinical results indicate that even though Total Ankle Replacement has a higher incidence of complications, it has a greater patient satisfaction rate, and the AOFAS scores of the two are similar. Gait analysis showed that the gait of Total Ankle Replacement patient was closer to the normal gait. In terms of sports ability, those who receiving Total Ankle Replacement has better sports ability. A well-functioning arthroplasty is better than a well-functioning arthrodesis.

Sino-German Spine Surgery Video Conference
May 29th
On May 29th, the Spine Surgery Department of the Shenzhen Second People's Hospital held a Sino-German Spine Surgery video conference with Prof. Michael A. Rauschmann of the Sana Klinikum Offenbach.
Prof. Rauschmann is the most famous spine master in Germany besides Prof. Mayer. He has won the FOCUS Top Physician Award for 10 consecutive years.
Bin Yan, Director of Spine Surgery at Shenzhen Second People's Hospital, first introduced Prof. Rauschmann to Department of Spine Surgery of the hospital.
Afterwards, Prof. Rauschmann shared a complicated case of Acute L3 Compression Fracture with Parkinson's disease and proximal junctional kyphosis(PJK) after surgery. He had a heated discussion on the surgical procedures and causes with the department, and shared some suggestions for preventing PJK, including the selection of the fusion segment, the preservation of the junctional soft tissue, avoiding excessive correction, and performing prophylactic vertebroplasty.
Another case was also shared by Prof. Rauschmann about an obese patient with sciatica, claudication, and low back pain who developed a sacral H-type fracture 10 days after surgery. He explained the causes and risk factors of this type of fractures. As the patient's suffering from an excruciating pain, he eventually adopted iliac screw for revision after evaluation.
In response to this case, the professor shared with everyone why he prefers to use iliac screws when the fusion is more than 3 segments. First, it has less irritation to the surrounding joints and soft tissue. Second, it is easy to remove, which heals the patients quickly.
Director Zhou Wenyu shared the preliminary clinical application of Orthopedic surgical robots. He pointed out that Orthopedic surgical robots integrate sensor technology, imaging technology, three-dimensional reconstruction technology, computer navigation technology and virtual reality interaction technology. On the other hand, the concept of Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) has also promoted the development of this new technology in the direction of less incision, higher accuracy, and lower surgical risk. Director Zhou also showed us a wonderful case of applying Orthopedic surgical robots in the hospital.
Director Ren Kai shared a case of Spinal Deformity and conducted a detailed academic discussion with Prof. Rauschmann.
Subsequently, specialists from both China and Germany launched a heated discussion on a various spine case from Shenzhen Second People's Hospital. Prof. Rauschmann also gave professional advice with his profound experience.
After the meeting, Prof. Rauschmann expressed that he was honored to participate in this Sino-German Spine Surgery Video Conference, which gives everyone the opportunity to share different difficult cases of the spine and discuss the optimal treatment of the spine patients. He looks forward to coming to the Shenzhen Second People's Hospital after the pandemic.
Sino-German Shoulder Joint Video Conference
June 5th
On June 5th, the Sino-German Sports Medicine Video Conference on Shoulder. This video conference was led by Prof. Brunner, the Director of Trauma and Shoulder and Hand Surgery at the Agatharied Hospital, Academic Teaching Hospital, University of Munich. To share and discuss difficult cases of shoulder with the Department of Sports Medicine of Shenzhen Second People's Hospital.
After the introduction of the two hospitals, the Department of Sports Medicine of Shenzhen Second People's Hospital shared a case of Arthroscopic PUB Rotator Cuff Repair Treatment. Prof. Brunner commented on the technology.
Then, Prof. Brunner shared a Shoulder Joint Replacement and Revision case. Replacement and revision case is rare in the hospital but the department still learned a lot from this case sharing.
Director Wei Lu also shared his Modified Arthroscopy Elastic Fixation Latarjet technology presentation. Prof. Brunner asked several questions on the presentation and said that Director Lu's surgical plan and treatment effect were very good, and the results were satisfying.
Prof. Brunner also shared a replacement and revision case on shoulder fracture which provided new concepts and technique for the Department of Sports Medicine.
After the case sharing, the Department thanked Prof. Brunner for sharing the instructive cases and valuable experience, and look forward to Prof. Brunner's visit to their hospital in December this year.
The three international orthopedic video conferences have ended successfully, deepening the mutual understanding between the Shenzhen Second People's Hospital and Basel Cantonal Hospital, Sana KliniKum Offenbach, and Agatharied Hospital, the Academic Teaching Hospital of University of Munich. This will also bring the Shenzhen Second People's Hospital’s international orthopedics construction to a new level.
