At 3:00 p.m. of February 20th, the team of four from Gloryren visited Prof. Blohmer, the Director of Department of Gynaecology with Breast Center, at the Campus Charité Mitte, Charité –University Medicine Berlin. Despite his busy schedule at the outpatient clinic, Prof. Blohmer still returned to his office during a short break to meet us and warmly invited us to the terrace of his office. Looking out from the terrace, we could see the oldest buildings of Campus Charité Mitte, carrying over 300-year history of Charité. With a smile, he told us that this is his favorite view to enjoy during his relaxation. During our discussion, Prof. Blohmer introduced us the distinctive features of the breast cancer diagnosis and treatment system in Germany. In Germany, gynecologists are not only responsible for ultrasound, biopsy, and surgery for breast cancer patients, but also play a leading role in chemotherapy, endocrine therapy, and immunotherapy, forming a highly integrated model of diagnosis and treatment that enables breast cancer specialists to develop strong interdisciplinary expertise. Prof. Blohmer said that clinical practice, research and teaching have always been his focus and hopes that in the future he would be able to accept some outstanding Chinese doctors as his MD students, visit major breast centers in China, and promote in-depth Sino-German collaboration in the diagnosis, treatment and research of breast cancer. He also told us he is planning to entirely shift the department’s focus to the teaching and treatment of breast cancer in the future, reducing gynecological surgeries and retaining only emergency procedures to further enhance the specialization of the breast center. Prof. Blohmer was proud of his teaching work. Among his former fellows, Prof. Kümmel is now the Clinical Director and Chairman of the Interdisciplinary Breast Unit Clinics of Essen-Mitte, leading the largest breast cancer center in Europe. The center receives more than 2,600 new breast cancer patients and performs over 2,500 surgeries each year. More than 20 years ago, Prof. Kümmel began specializing in breast cancer surgery under the guidance of Prof. Blohmer. Today, Prof. Kümmel has become a leading figure in this field, which brings Prof. Blohmer great satisfaction and further strengthens his passion for medical education. Prof. Blohmer said, "I am proud to have shown them the right way and see their names bigger than mine." As our discussion drew to a close, Prof. Blohmer introduced us the Chronology of the Heads of Gynecology at Charité displayed on the wall. It presents the names of all the heads of the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics at Charité since 1727.These distinguished figures in medical history have profoundly shaped the development of obstetrics and gynecology in Europe and the world. On the wall directly opposite Prof. Blohmer's desk, there is a career biography of Prof. Walter Stoeckel, the Director of the Department of Gynecology at Charité from 1926 to 1950 and one of Germany’s leading gynecologists during the Weimar Republic, excelling in breast surgery, transsexual surgery, and gynecological urology. He was born in 1871, the year the German Empire was founded, and passed away in 1961, the year the Berlin Wall was built, witnessing four of political eras. Prof. Blohmer told us it was after reading the textbooks edited by Prof. Stoeckel that he was inspired to pursue a career in gynecology, ultimately specializing in breast surgery. Through this visit, we gained not only a deeper understanding of Germany’s breast cancer treatment system, but also a profound appreciation for the legacy of medical education, history, and professional dedication of a great medical master. His perseverance, dedication, and vision left a lasting impression on us.
