The 1st Sino-Euro International Orthopedics Summit 2018 (hereinafter referred to as “2018SEOS”) came to a successful end in Guangzhou on September 8th. The summit was hosted by Foshan Hospital of TCM and Guangzhou Gloryren Orthopaedics Technology Co., Ltd.

The congress invited nearly 100 well-known orthopedic experts, international famous orthopedic scholars, and orthopedic masters with significant contribution to attend the congress as a lecturer group and to exchange cutting-edge technologies and clinical progresses with orthopedic colleagues in spine, sports medicine, joint, foot and ankle, trauma and bone tumor from China, Germany, France, Italy, North Americaand other countries. On the congress, a full range of exchanges in various forms such as master forum, new developments, case discussions, etc.were made. Simultaneous interpretation in Chinese and English and many domestic media reports made multi-dimensional interpretation of the event.

The congress was chaired by the current director of the Department of Orthopaedics, Peking University Third Hospital, director of the Institute of Spinal Surgery, Professor Liu Zhongjun, member of the Academic Committee of Peking University Medical School; Head of Spine Center Munich at Schön Klinik München Harlaching, Director of FIFA Medical Center of Excellence and Founding Member of ISASS - The International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery, as well as international consultant of Gloryren, Professor Michael Mayer, served as Congress President. Professor Xiaofang Liu, the president of Foshan Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, served as the Congress Executive President .

Professor Michael Mayer was not able to arrive at the congress venue in time due to work. He sent a video to the congress to convey the blessing and wish the conference a complete success.

In the opening speech of president Xiaofang Liu, he welcomed the experts and scholars who came from afar and emphasized that the opportunity of this academic conference is rare. He hopes that all Chinese and foreign masters can make in-depth discussions and exchanges on hot topics and key issues in the field of orthopedics in China and abroad, drawing new trends and new blueprints for the development of orthopedics.

Founding of Sino-Euro International Orthopedist Alliance

The congress integrated the superior resources of Chinese and European orthopedics, establishing the Sino-Euro International Orthopedist Alliance. The alliance founding ceremony was held on the congress day, September 7th. The guests who attended the ceremony were Jeffrey C. Wang, Stefano Boriani, Frank Kandziora, Jean-Charles, LE. HUEC, Daniel J. Rosenthal, Hermann Otto Mayr, Markus Walther, Brad Repsold and other over 60 members of the Alliance, who have witnessed this wonderful moment. The Sino-Euro International Orthopedist Alliance will complete the registration in Munich, and will take in more alliance members to achieve Sino-Euro orthopedic resources exchange, personnel training, and scientific research sharing.

The alliance is of epoch-making significance for research progress of various specialties in orthopedics in China and foreign countries. It embodies the wisdom of hundreds of experts and scholars in orthopedics of China and Europe. In the future, from the height of the discipline development, it will comprehensively combine and generalize the research status of Chinese and international research in all fields of orthopedics, showing the characteristics of progress, problems, solutions, constructive opinions, authority, forward-looking, timeliness, and globality. "The establishment of the alliance not only greatly contributes to the innovation of orthopedic science and technology in China, but also draws a strong impression on the development of China's orthopedics. Through this platform, excellent orthopedic surgeons would bechosen to visit famous European hospitals for study, which will strengthen the exchange of orthopedic resources, promote the concentrated and efficient dissemination of orthopedic professional knowledge and increase the communication between basic research and clinical.” ProfessorXiaofang Liu introduced.

On September 8th, The 1st Sino-Euro International Orthopedics Summit 2018 was divided into four sessions, namely, the Spine Surgery Session, Sports Medicine and Joint Session, Foot and Ankle Surgery and Trauma Session, and Bone Tumor Session. The congress attracted nearly a thousand experts and scholars from orthopedics in China and abroad. According to the individual learning needs of different specialties’orthopedic surgeons, cutting-edge technologies, novel and diverse perspectives and in-depth discussions improve clinical diagnosis and treatment competence, close communication and Chinese and international orthopedics effectively.

Frank Kandziora, Europe Region President of Spine Surgery Session, said in a welcome speech that four things for spine surgeons are the most important and need to be kept in mind: meetings, research, education and quality control/quality assurance. At this conference, you have the opportunity to get three of the above four things: opportunities to communicate with masters, the latest research knowledge and the most popular research topics.

Rosenthal, Head of the Section of Spine Surgery, Regional Hospital Bad Homburg, Germany gave a speech on Thoracoscopic Surgery for Degenearative Thoracic Disc Disease Tips and Tricks Learned After 25 Years Experience.

Professor Stefano Boriani, Baojun Xiao (Deputy Director of Orthopedics Department, Wuhan Union Hospital), Wenjun Wang (Director of Spine Surgery Department and Vice President of The First Affiliated Hospital Of University Of South China),  Zhengfeng Zhang (Chief Surgeon of Orthopedics Department of Xinqiao Hospital of Army Medical University), Yong Tang (Deputy Director of Minimally Invasive Spine Center of Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hospital, Sun Yat-Sen University) have given academic reports respectively.

Hermann Otto Mayr, Europe Region President of the Sports Medicine and Joint Session, delivered a welcome speech: With the congress as the beginning of fruitful cooperation between China and Europe, in the future, Sino-Euro Orthopedics Science Society and trauma society will be founded, and the scientific exchange between China and Europe will be more fruitful. He looks forward to more opportunities. He is also looking forward to cooperating with the Chinese people. Professor Markus Walther shared Flat Foot Reconstruction – Current Trends In Europe, Hallux Valgus – The Minimal Invasive Approach, Hindfoot Realignment Surgery in Ankle Arthritis, Management of Chronic Ankle Instability, and Management of Osteochondral Lesions of the Talus –The Consensus of the German Society of Orthopedic and Trauma Surgery, altogether six topics, permeating in various themes, and the academic reports lasted three hours, and the attending guests were fully attracted by the academic reports.

After that, Kanglai Tang (Director of Orthopedics Sports Medicine Department of The First Hospital Affiliated to AMU (Southwest Hospital) shared Diagnosis and Treatment For Flat Foot Related With Accessory Navicular; Xu Wang (Chief Surgeon of Orthopedics Department of Huashan Hospital, Fudan University) gave a lecture about Gains and Losses of Subtalar Arthroereisis, he pointed out that the treatment effect in adolescents for flat foot is good, but in adults is still controversial; Yongzhan Zhu (Director of Foot and Ankle Surgery Department of Foshan Hospital of TCM) shared Minimally Invasive Treatment for Old Achilles Tendon Injury; Hailin Xu (Chief Surgeon of Orthopedic Trauma Department of Peking University People's Hospital) delivered a lecture on Ankle Arthroscopic Repair of Lateral Collateral Ligament.

Prof. Stefano Boriani from IRCCS Istituto Ortopedico Galeazzi. Milan (I) /Director of Spinal Teaching Program and Head of Spine Tumor Surgery of the GSpine4 Spine Surgery Division gave a speech on Indications and Surgical Planning of En bloc Resection in the Spine, A Procedure of Surgical Oncology.

Wei Guo (Director of Bone Tumor Department, Peking University People's Hospital) delivered a report on Surgical Management of Primary Sacral Tumors in China and shared cases.

Zhongjun Liu (Director of Orthopedics Department of Peking University Third Hospital) talked about The Value of 3D Printing Implants in Spinal Tumor Surgery. He proposed the feasibility of the application of 3D printing prosthesis technology in the spine, limbs and other parts and its better role in the clinic, which can enhance the stability and is of great significance for the development of orthopedics.

Jianhua Lin (President of The First Affiliated of Fujian Medical University) gave lecture on Surgical Strategy for Metastatic Spinal Tumor En Bloc Resection. He proposed that pre-surgical evaluation of spinal metastases is especially important. It is not feasible to expand the indications for surgery blindly, only with careful operation during surgery, attention to prevention and control of complications can surgeons achieve better curative effect and benefit for patients.
