From June 24th to June 28th, the internationally renowned spine expert Dr. Schnake, Head of Center for Spinal and Scoliosis Therapy, Malteser Waldkrankenhaus St. Marien, Erlangen, Germany, and President-elect of the German Spine Society (DWG) 2026, visited Shenzhen Second People's Hospital for a week as a visiting professor. During the week, Dr. Schnake shared his valuable experience in clinical, teaching, scientific research and management through diverse forms of interaction, such as surgical guidance, case discussion, academic lectures. The one-week visit contains a wide variety of activities. The academic exchange sessions covered various hot topics in the field of spine surgery, such as: anterior surgery, robotic surgery, osteoporotic fracture, and adult degenerative scoliosis, etc. In the non-academic exchange session, Dr. Schnake shared his experience in spine department management and talent training. He shared that a department needs to have a clear mission and vision, and if you do not know where you want to go you will never arrive! For example, their department has set specific goals with respect to its international reputation, clinical expertise, national/international certification, research, internal training, employee satisfaction, etc. These goals are all confirmed by the doctors and nurses in the department, which ensures that the team can work together for common goals. At the same time, it is also very important to set the rules, every member of the team should communicate clearly and respectfully, and should have a sense of morality as a doctor and be aware of your position as role model; decisions in the team should be explained and transparent; feedback should be given timely, both constructive and empowering. These are the rules that everyone in their department should follow. He also shared that doctor is a profession that requires lifelong learning, and that learning by doing is not enough, especially for young doctors, so he encourages them to continue to learn new knowledge and grow through a variety of ways, such as taking online courses, joining national or international societies, and visiting different hospitals for further training. During the week-long exchange, Dr. Schnake from Erlangen-Nuremberg and Dr. YAN Bin's team from Shenzhen both gained a lot.Since 1997, Shenzhen and Nuremberg have been sister cities, the two sides already have a history of this relationship. We hope that there will be more opportunities for exchanges between China and Germany in the future, so that the two sides could rekindle their friendship!
